Activities with Amber - Earth Day!

Greetings families,

With today being April 22nd, I thought I would wish you all a HAPPY EARTH DAY! Earth day is one of my favorite days as we are able to celebrate this beautiful planet we live on and educate ourselves, and others, on how we can keep it clean. We can accomplish this by recycling. Today I’m going to teach you a fun way to teach your kids about recycling by finding some things in your house to make a wind-chime! Before you think that you don’t have any items in your house to make a wind-chime, let me tell you… yes, you do!

STEP 1: Collecting

Here is a picture of things I found in my house on my search to create a wind-chime. Parents, this is a good excuse to clean out a junk drawer! When searching for things, think of items that could make noise in the wind, and things that have a hole in them. Some of the items I found were tin cans, key rings, beads, washers, nuts (from the toolbox, not the pantry), old keys, seashells, chunky buttons, and mason jar lids.

Materials needed:

  • Base of the wind-chime: colander, tin cans, small cooling rack, license plate, coat hanger

  • Chimes: anything you find while collecting: buttons, shells, nuts, silverware, beads, old costume jewelry

  • String: I’m planning on using fishing line or some white string found around my house.

STEP 2: Building

This is where you can get creative! Below are a few images of wind chimes made out of recycled objects. Be creative with the items you use, the structure of your wind chime and the decorating. I’m going to share the assembly steps from design dazzle, check them out for more details!

  1. Select your materials and base (design dazzle chose a part of a broken lamp that they found)

  2. If your materials do not already have holes in them, use a hammer to nail a hole in the bottom of the can or object (parents should supervise this step)

  3. Tie a string through the chime objects and tie them to the base

Come join me on Wednesday (4/29) and we can make our wind-chimes together! Although our wind-chimes will all look unique, we can make them together through my virtual crafting class. For this class, bring with you all of the things you will need to make your wind chime. Feel free to go ahead and prepare some of the items (punching holes in the can, painting) beforehand, so that we can work together.

I can’t wait to make these with you next week. If you’re unable to join the class, please send me a picture of your creation! Have a great Wednesday and I hope to see you all next week for Crafting with Amber :)
