Stories with Stan - A Little Spot Learns Online
I hope this message finds you all healthy and well today! I hope that you all are getting settled in with our new normal routines. This week I had the chance to help my sister out by staying at home with my nephew while she went to work. I’m thankful that we are working remotely because I was able to help her out! This was my first up close opportunity to see what virtual school looks like. Brenton, my nephew, is 8 years old, and in the third grade this year. I was very impressed with his teacher and how she handled her virtual classroom! She kept Brenton, and the other students engaged during the entire lesson. Being a former teacher I know how hard that is to do in person, not to mention verbally! I’ve seen a lot of negativity about teacher’s effectiveness during this time of on-line learning! We have to continue to support them and give them grace, because they are still getting used to the new normal.
Here are a few tips I gave my sister leading up to virtual learning this year! We can help the teacher’s by making sure our students are prepared and set up for success!
Help your student establish a daily routine. Include time for school, meals, physical activity, and down time.
Identify a working space for your student. Some students may be able to work in their bedrooms, but most will need a clear separation between work and personal time.
Ensure that your student has the technical tools they need.
Help your student reach out to teachers for support if needed. Contact the school if your student is sick and unable to attend school.
Encourage your student to keep in touch with friends and mentors.
Take care of yourself! Give yourself, and others, some grace through this period.
Transitioning back to the classroom from virtual learning
So my nephew and many other students will be heading back to a physical classroom in a few weeks. Since we are all in this together(Learning Together)I’m looking for examples of how families in our circle prepared their kids to go back in the physical classroom this year. Also, what are some things you learned that you wish you would’ve known before the kids went back. Please shoot me an email at stan@campsoutherngroud.org with your experiences! I plan on sharing them anonymously in my next blog! They will be helpful for me and many other that are in our camp family! Thank you and I look forward to hearing/learning from you soon!
We are in this together
I want to continue to use literacy to bring us together! I love finding text to read to help us navigate through certain things that may be going on in our lives. Right now, we are spending more time in front of screens than ever! A lot of kids are still learning virtually and parents are working remotely! This week I’m going to share with you the story A Little Spot Learns Online by Diane Albers! This book takes help us navigate through the world of learning online! It’s a very cute story that I’m sure you will enjoy. I hope you join me when I read this story live but until continue to learn together and give one another grace!
