Stories with Stan - You Never Heard of Willie Mays?

Let’s continue to bring our families closer together during this time with literacy! I hope you’ve enjoyed the first few episodes of Stories with Stan. Again, thank you to those who reached out and told me you enjoyed them. Yesterday was opening day for the 2020 Major League Baseball Season. Like many other things in this country, it has been postponed but what a perfect opportunity to share a story about one of baseball’s greatest of all time! “You never heard about Willie Mays?!” is a biography by Jonah Winter that gives you an informal, but fun view into the life of Willie Mays. I hope you learn something new while reading along with me. For all you baseball fans, this will surely make you smile! Sing with me now “Take me out to the ballgame, Take me out with the crowd,...........” Baseball and all the pastimes we love will be back before you know it!

Library Resources

Audible has made all of their children's books available for free during this time and has several languages you can choose from. This is an amazing resource for your kids, Audible has so many great books to listen to, I plan to listen to several of these myself!

In addition, if you have a library card, you should be able to access free audiobooks by downloading your library's app; some common ones are LibbyHoopla, and RBDigital.

Time for Kids wants to help you as you are homeschooling and has made their 4 kid-specific editions available for free!

Activity #3: Book Reports

I’ll never forget in third grade when I was tasked with my first book report. I was excited to share all the information that I learned with all my classmates. It seemed as though every year after that, we had some type of report to complete. I must admit, the report guidelines were becoming repetitive and I began to lose interest. I’m sure a lot of your kids are beginning to be assigned book reports. I found this great article on Scholastic.com that has 25 book report alternatives that will keep things fresh and exciting when it comes to retelling! These ideas will rev up your students’ enthusiasm for reading while creating opportunities for them to practice reading comprehension strategies and build language arts skills. Most of the activities are adaptable across grade levels and are flexible enough for whole-group, small group, or individual assignments. CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THEM.

Let me know if you know if you have been using any resources to listen or read books while you're at home. Thank you for tuning in and there will be more literacy resources to come! “Always remember to be kind, and never judge a person, or a book, by their covers” -Stan Tucker
