Activities with Amber - Self Portraits!

Hello all!

We are back with another drawing how-to! This week we are going to learn how to draw a proportional self-portrait! Why is this important you may ask? Well, there are a few reasons.

  • They learn realistic drawing! One big reason is so that your young artists start to think about what actually makes up the face and that it is more than two dots for eyes and a curved line for a smile.

  • They begin to develop a sense of identity and confidence. When your artists take time to think about what facial features make up a self-portrait, they will begin to think about their own face and how they are wonderfully unique! When drawing their face, they will see that their eyes may be a different shape than some of their friends or their skin may be a different color and hopefully, realize that is something to celebrate!

Instructions!

  1. Start with a piece of paper and fold it hot-dog style AND hamburger style. Draw a dot on the line going up and down towards the top of the paper, and then towards the bottom of the paper. Connect these dots and you will have an oval! This is going to be your head.

  2. Eyes: The eyes are going to be drawn in a football shape on the horizontal folded line in the middle of the head.

  3. Nose: The nose is in the middle of the eyes and the bottom of the chin.

  4. Lips: The lips are in the middle of the nose and the bottom of the chin.

  5. Ears and Eyebrows: The ears are aligned with the nose is a curvy line. The eyebrows are above the eyelids and are a zigzag shape.

  6. Hair and Neckline: The hairline is above and below the top of the head. You will later erase the headline. The neck starts under the ears and slightly curves outwards.

  7. Shirt line: Shirt curves around the neck and extends out into shoulders.

  8. Erase all lines and fill in with color! Yay!

If you are joining me in the live class, here are some materials you may need: paper and their medium of choice (I will be using a pencil and coloring it in with crayons).

I hope to see you all in the Zoom class, have a great week!
