For Kids: Friendship Bracelets

Making friendship bracelets is a rite of passage at camp, and they something our campers continue to wear long after they leave Camp Southern Ground. They mean so much because they are a symbol a camper’s connection with new friends. They can be simple or more complicated – today we are going to learn the basics.

Let’s get started!

Supplies:

  • Scissors

  • Colorful thread or embroidery floss

  • Tape or something to tie your string to

Step one: Measure your wrist.

Step two: Cut your string. The length of the string should be four times the length of your wrist and sometimes longer if you are using a more complicated pattern.

Step three: Tape string to solid surface or tie to water bottle.

Step four: Make your bracelet!

How do I make my bracelet?

Difficulty Level  – Easy

Braid - You can't go wrong with a basic 3-strand braided bracelet. Take three or more pieces of string and take the farthest from middle then move it to the middle. Do this many times until it looks like this. Don't forget to hold your strings tight! If you let go you may have to start over.

Difficulty Level – Medium

Use a wheel! -  Cut out a cardboard circle and add eight cuts around the edge. Place your strings in each slit. Then move the strings from one slit to the other using a pattern like this. This is easier because your strings are attached and you can pick it back up later with no hassle.

Difficulty Level – Hard

Classic Friendship Bracelet - Cut six or more long strings. Tie knot at the top and lay them out so that you can clearly see them. Tie knots while following patterns that range from easier to hard. Check out this site to find all ranges of patterns!

Now get ready for an amazing summer! We can't wait to watch our campers make new friends and show their connection through these bracelets.
