Moving in the Morning with Coach Caleb - Get Back Up!

Title.png

If there’s anything that wrestling taught me as a young athlete, was to get back up!  I started wrestling when I was in 4th grade and I learned very quickly that you were going to get knocked down a lot.  The opponent's job was to keep you down on the mat.  My coach told me the best move in wrestling is, “Just get back up”.  The only problem is that your opponent then drags you back to the mat.  And then you get back up.  And then you get taken back to the mat. This goes on until you get free.  You know who usually wins?  It’s the person who tried to get back up the most.

Life is going to knock us down.  Most of us are getting a knock down with this Coronavirus business.  The people who will overcome this and all the other challenges life throws at us are the ones who get up one more time than they get knocked down.

Thought of the day:

The secret of life, though, is to fall seven times and to get up eight times.
— The Alchemist

I recently watched my niece,  Anna,  learn to walk.  I couldn’t stop laughing at all of her hilarious failed attempts.  When she was first getting started, she would fall in every direction.  She’d fall forward, left, right, and of course down right on her soft diaper.  We would all laugh and clap when she would fall.

At first when she would fall, she would start to cry, but over time she would laugh with us after each fall.  We started to worry that maybe she enjoyed the failing too much and would never actually learn to walk.  Just a few days later, she was putting her steps together, and within a week she could walk clear across the living room floor.

This is similar to how we learn things.  The beginning is always the toughest and although we may be less dramatic than Anna, it can be emotionally draining.  Doing something new can be scary and if you’re doing it in front of people you are all the more vulnerable.  However, if we can learn to laugh at our mistakes and we can learn to praise the process of learning something new, we will find we can enjoy the challenges and our results will come all the quicker.
