Stories with Stan - We Are Together

I hope this message finds you all healthy and well today! I hope that you are all getting settled in with our new normal routines. This has been a year that has pushed all of us out of our comfort zones in some form or fashion. Whether you’re an adult or a child the new normal has not been an easy pill to swallow. I’m a people person and I love to be around others. Learning to social distance has been a real challenge for me that I’m still trying to adjust to. We all learn differently in regards to the style or speed in which we comprehend and that’s ok!

Don’t Miss The Live Reading!

During my time as a classroom teacher, I realized that children(we)are like popcorn. Some pop early, some pop late. In my family I’ve always been the late bloomer(popper)! So I understood that some kids may need a little more to water and sunlight to grow than others. As a first year teacher, in second grade, I quickly came to this understanding when I tested the reading levels of my classroom. I had some students reading on a first grade level and some students reading on a sixth grade level. I had to make 5 different lessons for my guided reading groups. Why weren’t all my kids reading on a second grade level? That was my first example of how some students pop earlier than others.  I think it’s extremely important for us to realize this now that back to school looks a different. For families who are learning remotely it’s important that you don’t compare your students to others and expect them to pop too soon!

I love this article written by Juliet Small that talks about the importance of allowing kids to learn at their own pace! Take two minutes to read this and I’m sure you’ll be glad you did!

We are in this together

I want to continue to use literacy to bring us together! I love finding text to read to help us navigate through certain things that may be going on in our lives. Right now, we are doing more together than ever. This week I’m going to share with you the story We Are Together by Britta Teckentrup! This book focuses on how we are capable to do things but there is so much beauty when we work together. I hope you to see you when I read this story live but until continue to learn together!
