Growing at Home - Getting Ready for Back to School
It’s hard to believe that school is just right around the corner. This has been a strange summer for all of you, and the strangeness doesn’t seem to be going away quite yet. School will probably look different for most of you this year, but you can still have fun with it!
Growing at Home - Reading for All Ages
Who wants their children to read? Especially your older kids? Reading is such a healthy hobby, and will help our children develop so many skills as they grow!
Growing at Home - Growing Plants
Have you started a small garden yet under quarantine? Or planted any flowers? Watched anything new grow in your front yard? Let’s go look at those plants really closely and learn how they grow and give back to our planet through their natural life cycle.
Curiosity Based Learning
One of the greatest parts of the summer camp experience for kids is exploring new things and discovering where their talents or passions are. At CSG we encourage kids to ask questions! What kind of bug is that? Why didn’t my arrow hit the target? What’s a beet and do I really want to eat it? When kids ask questions it means they are in a curious state-of-mind.
Growing at Home - Teaching Independence
With summer well underway and the kids having already been home a surprisingly long time, everyone has had to come up with ways to be creative and fill their children’s time. Self-entertainment is an important skill for children to develop that will be useful long after Covid19 has ended. The ability to self-entertain helps our children to focus, be creative, and independent.
Growing at Home - Learning from Movies
Chances are that even if your family is not big on screen time, you will probably have several movie nights this summer. Let’s face it, kids love movies, so let’s turn movies into learning opportunities where our kids can reflect and experience personal growth from the lessons they learned through the film. Movies are very influential to our children so choose family movies with fun and healthy life lessons.
Growing at Home - The Water Cycle of our Planet
Do you have a river near your house? Or a lake? It’s time to take an adventure to your closest body of water because today we are going to learn about water all over the earth! About 96.5% of Earth’s water is in the oceans, the rest is in lakes, rivers, streams, polar ice caps, and clouds.
Growing at Home - Discoveries in your Backyard
There is so much exploring to be had this summer! Adventure and learning awaits us. The possibilities, even from our own back yards, where there are so many bugs, plants, amphibians, birds, and other creatures, are endless.
Growing at Home - Self Care for You and the Family
When we think of self-care, our minds often go to yoga classes and massages, and while those are great things that we should definitely do when social distancing ends…they don’t really help much with our daily self-care. Rather than trying to incorporate some new hobby that you won’t want to keep up with, let’s talk about how your family can incorporate self-care into your daily activities.
Growing at Home - Economics for Kids
There’s a lot going on in our world today and it’s good for our kids to understand the world around them. Today we are going to talk about how to teach our kids the basics of economics. Money can be a challenging topic to discuss with kids, but don’t be afraid, teaching them this now will help them grow into intelligent and successful adults.
Growing at Home - Learning from the Sky
We can learn so much from the sky, and there’s no better time to study it than while we’re all under quarantine. Below are some free activities that your whole family can enjoy. Pick a comfortable place on the ground, lay down a blanket, maybe bring a pillow, make sure you’re not looking at the sun, don’t forget some snacks, and here we go:
Lessons I Learned from Military Children
April is the Month of the Military Child. For the last 3 years I have had the honor of serving some of these amazing kids, and I wanted to share a few lessons that they have taught me about what diversity, strength, and community really look like.
Growing at Home - How to Make Mistakes
As parents, the natural inclination is to protect our kids, to shelter and rescue them from harm and the miserably intense feelings of failure or distress. However, failure is a great place for our kids to learn and grow! There is no better time to teach your kids how to learn from their mistakes, than while they're safe under quarantine.
Stories with Stan - When You’re Feeling Sick
Let’s take this time of social distancing to bring our families closer together! One way to do that is by reading as a family. As some of you may know, I’m passionate about literacy and reading aloud is one of my favorite things to do! As a kid I loved having stories read to me and I still do to this day.I compare a good read aloud to having front row seats at a theater watching your favorite play.
